Leyden Jars

Rubbing certain materials together, like glass and wool, causes electrons to be transferred between them. Primitive generators based on such materials were used to study electricity in the eighteenth century. In 1775 Pieter van Musschenbroek discovered a device that could store the charge created by these primitive generators. These devices became known as Leyden Jars.
