"Inverse Trigonometric Functions"
The arcsin, arccos and arctan functions cause a lot of confusion. They are referred to as the inverses of the sine, cosine and tangent functions respectively even though sine, cosine and tangent are not invertible! Also, various ranges are used for arcsin, arccos and arctan. Finally, the arcsin, arccos and arctan functions are sometimes denoted by sin-1(x), cos-1(x) and tan-1(x) respectively even though the -1 does not imply an exponent! Therefore, it is advisable to not refer to these functions as inverses, to specify the desired ranges, and, to not denote them by sin-1(x), cos-1(x) and tan-1(x).
